Recent eats: 5 de Mayo, Firehouse Lounge, Zanzibar's

Sampling the Enchiladas Rancheras at 5 de Mayo I was impressed with the bright enchilada sauce, chocked full of grilled tomatoes, bell peppers and onions. The cheese enchiladas beneath were properly melted throughout. Rice dominates a third of the plate, while a cool guacamole and lettuce salad with a slice of tomato completed the dish. My table-mate enjoyed pork carnitas – pork tips garnished with a slew of grilled onions.

I've frequented the Firehouse Lounge on S.E. Sixth the past few years for libations and breakfast. A couple of dishes I've tried include the “Everything” omelet and a breakfast burrito so laden with eggs, cheese, and sausage the only way to eat it is open face.

Missing an opportunity for breakfast one Saturday morning I opt for a Veggie Burger, named not for being a meatless patty but for the mound of lettuce, tomato and onion heaped upon it. For a frozen burger cooked on the grill it wasn't bad at all, in fact it was rather tasty with well-defined grill marks.

It's no secret my fondness for the rooibos tea espresso and the Linda Special at Zanzibar's on Ingersoll [see blog post]. If you're not familiar with the Linda Special its your choice of toast or bagel topped with cream cheese, cheddar and scallions, then broiled.

A popular option is to mix steamed scrambled egg in with the toppings before broiling. It's tasty but I find the Linda Special more appealing sans egg.
