Great mornings start at Local Yocals FarmHouse

Local Bites, the renovated basement food court in the Greater Des Moines Partnership Building at 700 Locust St., features seven local food vendors: Burger Shop, Jimmy’s Gyros, L’Italiano, Local Yocals FarmHouse, Moar Tacos, Teriyaki Boys, and Viva Mexico.

For the past few months I've been frequenting Local Yocals FarmHouse, and have been particularly smitten with their small, à la carte menu of familiar breakfast favorites, made with locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast is served weekdays from 7:00 to 10:30 a.m. Here's what I've been fortunate to enjoy so far.

The B G & E features a split, crisped buttermilk biscuit topped with a delicious sausage gravy and a jumbo fried egg.

Orange juice fresh-squeezed on the spot, left. Center, an Egg Sandwich with tomato and kale? Yup, and tasty too! Plus cheese in a house bun. The Breakfast Wrap, right, comes with scrambled egg, red bell peppers, onions, cheese, and crispy potato. A choice of Berkwood Farms ham, bacon, or housemade breakfast sausage can be added to either, plus sour cream and salsa for the wrap.

A Breakfast Box of Hoe Cakes and housemade breakfast sausage, with delightful sides of orange honey butter and maple syrup. I love the flavor and texture of cornmeal pancakes! The sausage is firmly textured and delicately seasoned; I want to revisit it in the breakfast sandwich. Sides of butter and syrup are too good to intermix.

Another Breakfast Box, this with Home Fries, a pair of over easy eggs, and a thick slice of Berkwood Farms bacon. The potatoes are superb: skin-on, browned and tender, interspersed with sweet caramelized onions. I could have ate a double order!
