Farewell to Donut King, a visit to Donut Hut, and a Djonuts pop-up

UPDATE: Donut King closed in March 2016, but reopened two years later at a different location in East Des Moines and selling doughnuts out of Bauder's Ice Cream on Ingersoll. See Donut King returns!
Whirlwind visit to Donut King upon hearing the news of their being forced out of business by developers. Loathing those who can't make up their minds, I went balls deep with trios of Chocolate Glazed, Chocolate Chocolate, German Chocolate – the apex predator of chocolate doughnuts, and rounding off the baker's dozen with four unadorned Home Cut.

Comforting, simple, plain-as-fuck Home Cut and a frosted Chocolate Chocolate. Simple is best.

Chocolate topped Old Fashioned and a Dutch Crumb at Donut Hut on Douglas and 50th.

Donut Hut makes the best apple fritter in town, IMHO! Moist, pulls apart easily, flavored throughout; its a delight! Of champagne cake lore, Barbara's Champagne Cake products are available at Donut Hut.

During this year's Free Comic Book Day festivities at Capes Kafé, baker Joe Formaro surprised all with a Djonuts pop-up offering six exciting flavors of his baked doughnuts. I scored personal favorites, Cinnamon Sugar and Lemon Buttercream. Excelsior!

UPDATE: Capes Kafé closed in Sept. 2018.
