Sampling Mullets' sandwich-inspired pizzas

Lately I visited Mullets to sample three of their sandwich-inspired pizzas. I first tried a large Chili Dog pizza slathered with chili con carne, then topped with diced beef wiener, mozzarella, cheddar, and diced onion and pickle.

Visually not what I expected with all the cheese in view, but the sight of raw onion and pickle raised my anticipation level. The aroma of pickles with a sub-hint of chili reminded of the smells at George the Chili King, a popular chili dog joint on Hickman [see blog post].

As for taste it's pretty much the same flavor as a chili dog with the added bonus of melted cheese. The abundant pickle and onion adds a contrasting flavor and crunch but doesn't distract from the chili base.

On my next visit I was able to order a large half-Grinder, half-Gringo Dos pizza.

The Grinder sports a bright and chunky tomato sauce, savory dollops of housemade grinder meat, onion, green bell pepper, jalapeño, and mozzarella. Veggies still exhibit an appealing toothiness. Overall quite zesty!

The Gringo Dos is quite frankly a bacon cheeseburger with pizza crust instead of a bun. A ketchup and mustard blend sauce is applied judiciously enough, offering familiar flavors without being overbearing. Atop this lay substantial chunks of ground beef, decent-sized pieces of crisp bacon, plus jalapeño, onion, mozzarella and cheddar. Finished with pickle, lettuce and tomato, the only thing missing is a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds. I would even venture a drizzle of mayo given a few packets. The Gringo Dos boasts substantial beefy, bacony flavors – usually the Achilles heel for most bacon cheeseburger pizzas, like the one I tried not too long ago at Rock Power Pizza [see blog post].

Both pizzas I enjoyed at Mullets had a crisp yet chewy crust with tasty spots of char on the underside. All these builds do a great job of emulating the sandwiches they pay homage to. Mullets also offers a Philly Cheesesteak pizza to even out the selections.
