Recent eats: Felix & Oscar's 'Nasty' Grinder, Zombie Burger's The Dead + Breakfast! Biscuit.

Of late I've embraced Wig and Pin in Ankeny over Felix and Oscar's for offering the best deep dish pizza in the Metro [see blog post]. Having been gifted a Groupon for Felix and Oscar's I returned to their Merle Hay location for a saucy pizza that rather impressed me.

The pizza in question is the 'Nasty' Grinder, with Italian Sausage, ground beef, mozzarella, jalapeños, crushed red pepper, and from the pronounced vinegary aroma I suspect judicial use of bottled hot sauce. The pizza is appropriately saucy; zippy but not overpowering for my experienced palate for things hot. Large chunks of fennel-laden sausage take notice.

After a successful introduction of some stellar biscuits and gravy for brunch at Centro [see blog post], baker/chef/restaurateur George Formaro recently brought out a biscuit burger at Zombie Burger + Drink Lab for a limited run. The appropriately named The Dead + Breakfast! sandwich featured a biscuit bun with American cheese, bacon, a house-made breakfast sausage patty paired with a burger, plus a fried egg and sausage gravy.

The gravy was flavorful: smooth, salty and spicy, imbued with fine bits of sausage. The zesty sausage patty was marvelous! I'd rather have another in place of the burger patty. The fried egg sported a thick but still viscous yolk. The biscuit neither disappoints.

On the cons the bacon was rather wilted and some of the egg white appeared to be absent, but the most disappointing aspect was the amount of gravy served. In a promotional photo posted on Facebook, the gravy issued forth from the burger as a dual lava flow. What came with my burger was in a plastic cup. Quite the non sequitur for my expectations.
